Add on a 5 hour indigenous craft-making workshop with Dennis Shorty (lunch included) for $195 per person.

Once you arrive in Dennis and Jenny’s home and Art Studio, you will be welcomed with a smile, a mug of hot tea or coffee and shown to your cabin or glamping tent. The community of Ross River located at the confluence of the Ross and Pelly rivers has long been used as a gathering place for First Nation peoples for thousands of years.

The Kaska Dena people of Ross River place high value on the land and traditions and the community is surrounded by vast landscape with clear, cold creeks and rivers.

The area is populated with numerous species of wildlife including moose, mountain goats, mountain sheep, wolves, grizzlies and black bears.

During your stay here, you will not only experience the northern hospitality of Dennis and Jenny but also see Dennis at work creating his incredible sculptures, art andmusic.

Take time to explore the neigbourhood and explore one of the nearby lakes or the banks of the Pelly River.

This evening, you will enjoy dinner with your hosts in their homestead or around a campfire as they share stories of Dennis’s incredible life journey and of his Kaska people in the sub-Arctic boreal forest of Canada’s Yukon.

Meals generally include a mix if indigenous and non indigenous dishes to give you an authentic taste of northern Canadian culinary styles.

Following a hot breakfast with Dennis and Jenny, you can then choose from a number of activities to make the most of your time in the community. Many visitors will explore the village on foot or drive further along Highways 4 or 6 to experience the landscape.

Many visitors will want to make the most of their time with an accomplished craftsman and musician and participate (optional extra) in the art or indigenous craft making workshop conducted by Dennis from 11 am to 4pm. If you choose to participate, lunch will be included.

There will be free time to explore Ross River on your own including time to check out the suspension bridge over the Pelly River and the Dena Cho trail.

Once again, there will be dinner and storytelling indoors or around a campfire.

After breakfast, bid goodbye to your hosts and new found friends and drive onwards to Dawson City, Teslin or back to Whitehorse.

Following a hot breakfast you can choose to explore the Ross River area further.

You can rent a canoe and fishing gear and go for a relaxing paddle on the lake at your doorstep. Many people prefer to simply experience the silence and beauty of a northern lake and view birds and waterfowl.

For those wanting to try their hand at fishing, there are arctic grayling, burbot, coho salmon and lake trout in the nearby river and lakes.
